Jakobe Furniture is a leading contract manufacturing and installation company specializing in comprehensive design fulfillment. Started in 2004, Jakobe Furniture combines decades of custom fabrication experience with an expertise in the hospitality industry that has lead to its rise as an industry leader. Just recently, Jakobe Furniture recently received recognition of excellence by one of their customers, one of the largest restaurant chains in the country.

Along with the manufacture of customized booths, chairs and tables, they also offer personalized delivery, installation service and shipping.

Situation

In late 2012, Kansas Manufacturing Solutions, formerly MAMTC, formed a partnership with Wyandotte County Economic Development (WyCO EDC) and the local utility, Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU). The partnership resulted in an energy efficiency rebate program that encouraged manufacturing facilities to identify and implement energy savings measures.

The Energy Efficiency Rebate Program was timely for Jakobe Furniture because they were in the middle of exponential growth and were implementing energy saving improvements in the facility.

In 2013, Jakobe Furniture hired KMS to help them identify and implement energy savings opportunities. Throughout 2013 and into 2014, they began implementing their first energy savings projects, including new lighting and new air compressors.

Solution

Jakobe Furniture engaged with KMS in 2013 to help them participate in the BPU/WyCo EDC/KMS Energy Rebate Program. Over the course of about a year, KMS helped them identify, prioritize, quantify and implement several opportunities in the facility where they could receive significant energy savings. Further, KMS managed all parts of the process from energy audit all the way through managing installation of new systems. This included writing specifications of equipment, receiving bids, managing installation, and verification once the systems were installed.

Results

  • Upgraded and the most energy efficient air compressors
  • Upgraded lighting and controls
  • Invested $77,230 in the facility, will save about $150,000
  • Doing these upgrades helped company meet sustainability requirements with a large customer which amounted to about $1,000,000 in sales
